Some people are able to manage stressful events and feelings of anxiety or depression more easily than others. You may assume such people have greater emotional strength or certain dispositions, but it’s more likely that they have coping tactics that allow them to be more resilient to challenging events and circumstances.

Strengthening resilience can lead to an improved quality of life by helping protect a person from mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. It also can help people cope better with the effects of mental trauma, such as post-traumatic stress disorders, grief, bullying, and phase of life adjustment anxiety.

Our Resiliency, Coping and Wellness Training can help patients increase their abilities to adapt to and recover from life’s challenges or adversity.

What is Resilience?

The Mayo Clinic’s definition of resilience is the ability to “adapt well and recover quickly” after experiencing trauma, tragedy, adversity, or stress. Those with a resilient disposition are better equipped to maintain “poise and a healthy level of physical and psychological wellness” in the face of life’s challenges.

Emotional resilience allows us to view difficulties as temporary and alterable, and not perceive adversity as catastrophic. Those with less mental strength need not assume they are forever at the mercy of emotional storms — resilience training can help a person develop an appropriate strategy for lessening negative thinking and learn effective ways to manage life’s setbacks.

Some of the factors associated with resilience are the capacity to control strong impulses and feelings, having confidence in one’s own abilities and strengths, and possessing good communication and problem-solving skills.
